I don’t often use this space for anything other than my musings on crisis communication and the crisis of the day. This is no crisis. My wife and are so blessed to have three incredibly talented adult children and nine grandchildren. Our daughter Ashley Rodriguez (introduced here before) is a top food blogger (best cooking blog according to Saveur magazine) and now a cookbook author. (Her award winning blog is notwithoutsalt.com)
Her first cookbook, Date Night In by Running Press is available for pre-order on Amazon and officially released on December 23. But even as a pre-order only, it is inching up Amazon’s best seller lists!
So, sure I’m proud! (She’s a much better writer than her wanna be dad! and gets most of her talent from her incredible mom).
Date Night In is more than just a bunch of great recipes. Ashley is a fabulous food photographer, teaching classes on food photography and having her work in most of the major food publications and websites. In this book she reveals with striking candor and vulnerability the challenges of keeping love in marriage alive in the busyness of raising kids and professional careers. She gives some great advice that has inspired me to try to be a better husband as well.
Apologize for this brief personal and even somewhat commercial post, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t pass on to you a great Christmas (or early Valentines Day) suggestion.
Pinterest, as most now know, is the fastest growing social media site–ever. That means it is relevant for crisis and emergency communication under the theory that you have to go where your audiences are. Pinterest’s audience is still over 80% women and some would describe it as a shared scrapbook–I wouldn’t, but some would.
When KING5 News, the leading TV broadcaster, decided to do a story on Pinterest they found a real expert in Seattle on it. Someone who uses it, loves it, and knows how to leverage its functions to expand the reach of their blog. None other than my daughter Ashley (Baron) Rodriguez. We watched her on TV last night as she explained to the Pacific Northwest just what Pinterest is and what it is good for. If you’ve been around crisisblogger very long, you probably already know that she is one of the top food bloggers in the world (not according to me, but according to Times Online of Financial Times London). Her blog Not Without Salt is gorgeous, filled with spectacular photos and of course great food which she creates.
Sure, I’m proud. But this also reveals one of my secrets of keeping up on this social media stuff. I’ve got three top experts in the family so I don’t have to go far to get the scoop on the latest.
OK, I’m a very proud dad–proud of all three of my grown children. But today is a special day with the Timesonline featuring an interview of my daughter Ashley Rodriguez talking about her now famous food blog Not Without Salt.
I’d like to think she got some of her interest in and writing abilities from me, but she has far surpassed me in that area now. I do know for certain that she got her talent and passion for food and beauty from my beautiful and talented wife.

I’ve been having a good humored blog competition with my daughter, Ashley Rodriguez. It’s not been much of a contest for the last while–she’s been cleaning my clock. Now with timesonline getting her more traffic, I’m doomed.
The contest, of course, is about visits to our respective blogs. Her blog, artisansweets.wordpress.com, routinely gets about 4-5 times more traffic than crisisblogger–so I actually lost the game a long time ago. Ashley is a true foodie–and an outstanding writer. She worked under Sherry Yard for Wolfgang Puck at Spago in Beverly Hills and turned down the job of pastry chef at Puck’s Cut restaurant in Beverly Hills before returning to Bellingham to raise two wonderful boys. So she turned her passion for food, particularly all things sweet and delightful into writing.
Of course, I have to also admit she has a bit of extra help in this blog contest from her husband. He is a professional photographer (www.gabrielboone.com) and as you can see if you check out her blog the photography stunningly matches the incredible food and writing.
Today her blog was recognized as one of the top 50 food blogs by none other than timesonline. She is listed as number 16, among some very impressive company.
Ashley–you win! And I couldn’t be prouder.
